It seems black women are always trying to define thier beauty and hair by caucassian standards of what beauty is. Why do black women spend so much on products to straighten their hair when their hair was never designed to be straight?

I believe by always trying to judge yourself by a different races standards you loose touch and forget just how beautuful your natural hair is.

I wouldn't necessarily say we are defining our beauty that way. its just that society has tried to define our beauty.our straightened hair is a way for us to fit into society. if we straighten our hair it looks smooth and finer. then we are "accepted" in to society. you are right, by right our hair is not designed to be straighten, but to look more refined we seem to think we need to change it. If we wear it natural society tends to frown or perceive us as militant. Hopefully, African Americans are changing the precept. we have to look within ourselves and see our true beauty for other to see it. i hope this helps

Actually, the same can be said of white women as well. It's not limited to black women only. There are many artificial redheads or blondes out there or straight haired women who curl and perm their hair and they don't really do it for any practical purpose such as easy maintenance, they mostly do it for vanity. If black women didn't straighten their hair, most of them would have to sport short semi bald hairdos, since letting their hair grow long means having to deal with thick hard to style and even harder to clean afros.

She washed it like once every 2 weeks only and it was like a Ritual. She followed a procedure with all of these products. No one was allowed to touch her hair.

Other days my hair is short, and then I may decide I want to add some extensions. Like fashion, hair is a way for people to express themselves; And that does not just include black women. Women of all races enjoy primping and gussying up... hair is a woman's finery, surely you must know that. Do not make assumptions about an issue that you are uneducated about.

My best friend is white and her hair is very CURLY - she has opted to get a permanent straightener. I know an asian woman who dyed her hair brown with blonde streaks. I know a latin woman who is now a darker blonde as well. It's called style and versatility. By the way, my hair is natural, down past my shoulder blades and if I so choose, I can wear it in an floppy afro, in a wavy pattern or completely straight.
