Do anyone know a word that means using something for other than its intended purpose?

I really enjoy finding multiple uses for things or meeting a special need with an item designed for something else entirely. For example, I use an IV pole to hold a mirror so I can cut my own hair, and as a clothes rack the rest of the time. Is there an adjective that describes this practice or a noun that is this practice? Thanks!

well needless to say, performing such an action is only limited by one's own imagination; having said that, the item could be termed "multifunctional"; "substitute" is another.

There are others that would be politacally incorrect. It's initials are N R... R being "rigged". I don't know where that came from.
