Hair Design School?

I'm thinking about going to Hair Design School within the next year. Everyone tells me I'd make a good hair stylist because I'm always dying/cutting my hair. And I love the atmosphere at most hair salons I go to.

I'd like to know information about it. Costs, how long it takes til I graduate, average wage for a stylist, is it a good career? Whatever you know, tell me please!

the requirements for being a cosmetologist vary from state to state. You would need to contact the correct department OR you could just ask someone that has been doing it for awhile OR contact a hair styling school and ask.

Expect to put in at least 1500 hours and take a *state board* that is a test offered by your state that you must pass in order to get yourself licensed.

The test usually comprises a written exam and then a practical exam . The practical is where you take a model in and preform certain services like styling hair cutting manicuring hair perming etc and an instructor comes and judges each performance.

The state boards usually last all day

Ty! This will really help me decide =D Report It

the hours vary, from place to place it take about 1500-2000 for school, then your apprenticeship hours are about 2500- 3500, I have been a stylist for 16 years at first when you are an apprentice it is crappy pay and hard work! standing all day, and with your arms in the air can hurt but your body will get used to it, I own my own studio and I love it you can make great money, if you are trained well, update your skills( I still take at least 2 classes each year to up date my self) and if you have a great personallity. some of the best advice I have been given over the years by some of the most successful stylists:

"you have 2 ears and 1 mouth listen to your clients twice and much as you speak"!

"charge for your time, if a woman that has tons of hair and takes a ton of hair color usage charge her for your time damn it"!

"you are the one in control, if you do not think you can get a good result then say no! ( I always give them another option) your name is on the line, you will be the hairstylist that srewed up her hair even if she wanted you to try it"!

I have had a great time in this industry, I started very young, I am 30 now, Money wise you can make a good living depending on your clients (if you have alot) and how much you charge as well as the pay structure the salon you work for allows, chair rental can be quite lucritive, again location location, location! also take a business course it will benifit you I took a small one year one for small business befor I opened my shop, I think I should have taken it sooner in my carrer, also take care of you back, wrists, legs and so on, you body is your money maker, stand propourly (good posture) tighten up those abs, use a light wieght blowdryer, it will save your back, were comfy shoes, if you do were heels, keep a pair of comfy ones to change in to. decide what king of stylist you want to be a cutter or a colorist (I do both and make better money that way) I also do makeup and weddings, get trained by someone whos work you like, no point in taking any job and getting trained by some one that is a sloppy stylist or a bad teacher, well I hope that helped on check out this site www.behindthechair.com lots of info especially for Newbies, good luck!

I would call a local school you are interested and go and visit it. They will meet with you and show you around the school. They will send home a packet or info. with you on the cost etc. All states vary for the hours you have to go to school, mine is 2100 hours but I think we are one of the highest. How that works is you punch in and out on a time clock the hours that you are at school so not everyone that you started with will graduate together. You usually start out in the class room and working with hair heads . Then you bring in people you know and practice on them. Then it is actually people who are paying a minimal price for you to do their hair. I love doing hair and you can make really good money ( I make avg. 18.00 and hr. and I live in the midwest in a small town)at it depending on where you work and how you apply yourself. The downfall is most salons don't offer good benefits like other companies do.

Cosmetology school is not cheap but they do have great financial aid.

Good luck on whatever you decide. And like I said, just call a local school and chat with them. There is no obligation for you to go there but at least your would get a good feel as to what you are headed into.
